Piemonte: Where Textile Tradition Meets Technological Innovation
Piemonte is widely recognized as one of Italy’s most dynamic and advanced industrial regions. Strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, it contributes roughly 8% to Italy’s national GDP and plays a leading role in both the manufacturing and service sectors.
In the textile field, Piemonte boasts one of Italy’s most prestigious districts: the Biella Textile District, a name synonymous with luxury, quality, and technical sophistication. This district is a global benchmark for high-end wool production, particularly superfine merino wool, cashmere, alpaca, and mohair, and hosts an entire supply chain that spans from fiber to finished product.
Over 950 companies and 10,000 skilled professionals are active in this district alone, offering not just fabrics and yarns, but also combing, dyeing, finishing, and cutting-edge textile machinery. Many global luxury and fashion houses, including Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Fratelli Piacenza, and Reda, are rooted here, alongside a rich ecosystem of SMEs focused on niche innovation and sustainable development. Piemonte’s competitive advantage lies in its ability to merge centuries of craftsmanship with a strong culture of R&D, automation, and sustainable production. The region has been at the forefront of adopting environmentally responsible practices, from reduced water and chemical use to safer processes for consumers and workers alike, as promoted by national initiatives like Textile & Health.
